Man Utd target is in career crisis, Bastian Schweinsteiger has backed him to overcome it

Manchester United have been linked with a swoop on Bayern Munich for three different players.

If there is one transfer which has summed up Manchester United’s flawed moves since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, it is the move for Bastian Schweinsteiger.

United signed Schweinsteiger too late in his career and while the move cost the club just £15 million, it was £15 million wasted.

Fans have feared repeating similar style signings since, even though it has not necessarily stopped them.

And once again, the club is being linked with a move for a Bayern Munich midfielder whose best days may have passed.

Leon Goretzka career crisis

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, as part of a triple swoop with Leroy Sane and Alphonso Davies.

Sky Germany report United’s interest, and while Goretzka, 29, would bring considerable experience and physicality to the midfield, there are reasons to be concerned.

Goretzka is enduring a career crisis, where he has fallen out of favour under Vincent Kompany at Bayern.

This season Goretzka has not been selected to start a single Bundesliga or Champions League game, playing just 14 minutes.

It is very clear the midfielder has no future at Bayern, and needs to leave the club.

But should Manchester United save his situation, and lock themselves into a potentially expensive contract for a player who will be 30 in February? This remains open to debate.

Schweinsteiger advice to Goretzka

Former Manchester United and Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is urging Leon Goretzka not to give up.

He told TZ last month he retains faith in Goretzka and believes he can still have an impact at Bayern Munich this season.

“Keep working, the season is long, you need a lot of players at a good level,” Schweinsteiger advised, adding Goretzka is “still a good footballer who FC Bayern can still use well.”

Goretzka’s lack of game time has not changed since, and the less he plays, the less appealing he becomes for Manchester United.
