Man Utd in pole position to sign new Casemiro, Jason Wilcox can strike revenge over £64m disaster deal

Manchester United’s squad could look drastically different some September 1st and the close of the summer transfer window.

There is no underestimating how important this summer is for Ruben Amorim and also Ineos in their planned 2028 title charge, as Omar Berrada outlined.

In order to be competing for major honours by May 2028, Manchester United will need a squad capable of doing so by summer 2027 – which gives Ineos five transfer windows to get recruitment on point.

Out of all the impending transfer windows, it is this summer which is most important given the appalling position the club finds itself in at least domestically.

Due to this, United are expected to let at least 10 players leave the club, clearing space for arrivals who have the technical and physical demands which Amorim cannot extract from this current crop.

Now, United have been linked with leading the race to sign a massive midfield upgrade.

Manchester United lead race to sign Ederson from Atalanta

One position United are thought to want reinforcements in is central midfield, in which the options available to Amorim are far from ideal. Manuel Ugarte has struggled, while Christian Eriksen is likely to leave the club for free in June.

Over the past few weeks, Casemiro has shown himself rolling back the years, but it is not sustainable as he showed against Lyon last week with a below-par performance.

Due to this, United are looking for midfield upgrades, and now, according to Tutto Atalanta, Ederson could be the man chosen to come in and revamp Amorim’s midfield.

The Italian report claims that United are in pole position to sign the Brazilian and sit in advanced negotiations with his entourage over a possible move. United are determined to sign the talented midfielder and have overcome interest from Manchester City.

Ederson is viewed as the foundation on which Amorim’s team can be built this summer and he would cost just €60m (£51.3m), a figure that is reasonable for a player of his quality and growth.

The article concludes by stating the Premier League is his sure destination, with Manchester set to be home, whether United get a deal done or not to overhaul Amorim’s midfield options.

However, one caveat around the deal is that United are thought to be planning the transfer if Champions League football is achieved, or in other words, if the club can win the Europa League.

Interestingly, it will be the first time United do business with Atalanta since the £64m Rasmus Hojlund debacle, with John Murtough, the man responsible for that deal, now the director of global development at the Serie A side.

So, it could be a chance for Jason Wilcox to take revenge on Murtough. After this was announced, United fans had plenty to say on Murtough’s career move.

Ederson would be a massive upgrade for Manchester United in midfield

As far as midfielders go, Ederson is as well-rounded as they come, which earned him plenty of plaudits over the past few months. This has positioned him well as a potential Casemiro replacement for United this summer.

This season in particular, Ederson has evolved into one of Europe’s leading midfielders as he enters his prime years at 25 years old.

Ederson would ideally be played next to an Ugarte as he is more of a box to box midfielder, but could also work alongside Bruno Fernandes in games where the Red Devils are favourites.

The Brazilian is creative, can pick out passes, and take on opponents while also having the tenacity and defensive awareness to support his teammates at the back. Despite not having lots of tackles, he wins a high amount (62%) and has also won 151 duels in the league this season alone.

He is all action and has the legs to do it consistently, which makes this an exciting deal for United to do.
