Manchester United’s summer plans are beginning to ramp up as we enter May, with centre-back one position on Ineos’ mind.

It has been a long season for Manchester United, with plenty of ups and downs, yet somehow just 90 minutes stand between Ruben Amorim and the Europa League final.

The semi-final first leg 3-0 thumping of Athletic Club has put United in a very strong position, although Casemiro has urged that the job is not done with Bilbao no doubt already preparing their squad for a trip to Old Trafford.

After such a poor campaign domestically, winning the Europa League wouldn’t make it a good season for United as Alejandro Garnacho admitted. However, it would lead to Champions League football which in turn will give Ineos more to spend this summer.

Securing Champions League football would also mean a higher calibre of player available for Ineos to recruit with Viktor Gyokeres demanding Champions League football at his next club.

Now, it has emerged that one of the globe’s finest central defenders is on United’s radar this summer.

Manchester United have held talks over Jonathan Tah signing

This summer, a centre-back is one of four priority positions for United but with funds been thrown at the front-line, a defensive addition could be on the cheaper side.

It was reported that United have an active interest in Jonathan Tah and now already this story has developed.

According to Florian Plettenberg, United have now entered the race to sign Tah on a free once his contract at Bayer Leverkusen expires.

United have had talks with Tah’s management, which suggests Ineos are now pushing for the addition but face serious competition.

Tah is wanted by Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid but the Catalan side are thought to be favourites, but it is not done yet.

It would be an excellent move for United to do this summer and significantly bolster the centre-back options.

Jonathan Tah could be the signing of the summer for Manchester United

Signing Tah for free this summer would be an absolute bargain, and he would slot right in as a starter for Amorim.

Speaking in 2024, Xabi Alonso, as quoted by the Express, labelled Tah as being among the world’s best defenders.

“Overall, Jonha is performing at the highest level and I am really happy for him because he deserves all the praise and all the good moments he’s living – that he keeps playing for us and happily for the national team as well. I think he is one of the world’s best defenders.”

Tah is a £40m defender, so to get him for nothing will be a big blow for Leverkusen but a brilliant move from whoever manages to complete the deal.

Tah and Harry Maguire as centre centre-back options would be elite and allow time for a younger long-term solution to be found.
