Manchester United have reportedly dropped out of the race to sign Florian Wirtz as it has emerged another Premier League giant are keen on the German midfielder.

Erik ten Hag’s side reportedly held an interest in the midfielder alongside some of Europe’s top clubs but Manchester United are now out of the race for the promising midfielder, if the Daily Star are to be believed.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, according to the report, have entered the race for the £80 million German from Bayer Leverkusen.

Manchester City and Bayern Munich are seemingly the early favourites for the midfielder’s signature but Klopp’s side are now keen on entering the race for the 20-year-old.

United out of the race

According to the report, United have declared themselves out of the race for the German midfielder but had things been different 18 months ago, they may well have signed him.

The report states that when Ralf Rangnick was managing the club with a view to being a consultant after his period in charge, United had the chance to sign the German but missed out.

Now, according to the report, Wirtz is not interested in joining United and has instead prioritised a move elsewhere which he believes would be better for his development.

This would be a blow for the Red Devils as Wirtz is a superb midfielder but a player of that ilk may not be the priority when there are so many other gaping holes in the team that needs addressing.

The 20-year-old has six goals and four assists in all competitions this season.

United’s lack of money

The final few weeks of the window were relatively quiet as the Red Devils broke the bank to sign three of Ten Hag’s key targets; Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Mason Mount.

Sofyan Amrabat, Altay Bayindir and Sergio Reguilon were the only new arrivals for relatively cheap fees towards the end of the summer window.

So the signing of Florian Wirtz, despite how exciting it could be, will not happen simply due to the lack of funds that are at the manager’s disposal.

The club’s priority over the next few weeks must be the stadium redevelopment and the backroom restructuring to make United the global powerhouse that they once were.
