Manchester United ‘very attentive’ to situation around £73 million German

Manchester United, alongside some other top European sides, have reportedly registered their interest in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the exciting attacking midfielder, who has excelled under Xabi Alonso following a serious injury he suffered last year.

Florian Wirtz has three goals and four assists to his name this season and, aged just 20, has plenty of room for development.

A report from Spanish outlet SPORT has linked the midfielder with Barcelona but United have also been credited with an interest. Whether they could pull the deal off, however, remains to be seen.

United’s interest in Wirtz

According to the Spanish outlet, Barcelona are keen on the 20-year-old and they believe he could prove to be the difference in their league defence as well as trying to kick on in the Champions League.

The Catalan outlet states that Xavi Hernández’s side have to give up on the German, however, due to their economic conditions. Sport adds both the player and his entourage will not wait if the ‘right offer’ were to arrive from elsewhere.

Bayern Munich are also, perhaps unsurprisingly, interested in the German, but the Spanish outlet mentions the strong interest from three Premier League sides.

Wirtz is not the player United need

Despite the German’s obvious qualities, signing Wirtz makes no sense if the captain of United plays in the same position as the 20-year-old.

The fee that Bayer Leverkusen are looking for, according to the report, is around £73 million. Considering the financial fair play restraints United must adhere to, and the money available for signings, there are other areas of the squad that need to be addressed first.

Defensive acquisitions, as well as a long-term replacement for Casemiro, should be much higher on the United agenda than the signing of yet another attacking midfielder.
