Liverpool join Manchester United in Alvaro Fernandez race just months after permanent Old Trafford exit

Manchester United still have issues at left back with injury woes continuing for Erik ten Hag ahead of the Premier League’s return.

The second international break of the season is here and has largely been dominated by speculation about Erik ten Hag’s future.

Ineos have discussed Ten Hag’s future as Manchester United boss but it looks like he is staying put.

Ten Hag has suffered a blow though with defender Noussair Mazraoui out until November.

The hope is that Luke Shaw will return from injury soon enough, which would allow Diogo Dalot to switch over to the right side.

Mazraoui’s situation is far from ideal though and United may consider another defensive signing in January.

Liverpool want ex-Manchester United talent

Red Bull Salzburg’s Amar Dedic has been linked after impressing at both right back and left back over in Austria.

United may yet go for a former player though with Alvaro Carreras linked.

Reports from Portugal just a few days ago noted that United are keeping tabs on Carreras for a potential return to Old Trafford in 2025.

United sold Carreras – who fans may know as Alvaro Fernandez – to Benfica for just £5million earlier this year and are understood to have a buy-back clause in the deal with Ineos sensing his potential for the future.

Barcelona and Real Madrid also want Carreras and another name can now be added to his list of suitors.

Spanish newspaper AS report that Liverpool are now interested in signing Carreras.

It’s stated that the Reds have ‘shown the greatest interest’ in Carreras from the clubs on his tail.

Benfica have placed a £42million release clause into Fernandez’s deal but Liverpool would certainly be looking to sign him for much less.

Alvaro Carreras to Liverpool would sting

United fans have been left frustrated over Carreras as he shines at Benfica.

Shaw and Malacia simply can’t be relied upon right now and Harry Amass is still too far away from a major first-team role.

Carreras may have been the kind of prospect to bring through and develop into a first-team role, especially given how he is shining in the Champions League.

The Spaniard’s ability to drive forward with the ball makes him a real threat going forward and he is taking his game to a new level in Portugal.

Seeing Carreras improve and develop into a star would be difficult enough, but seeing him then sign for Liverpool?

That would be a real source of frustration for United fans and many will hope that the buy-back clause on Carreras can not only bring him back to Old Trafford, but leave Liverpool frustrated in the process.
