Mateus Fernandes in his own words
Mateus Fernandes signed for West Ham from Southampton in summer 2025.
In was an astute signing as the Hammers will make a profit on talented Fernandes, despite their relegation.
When Fernandes joined West Ham, he gave an interview to their club media where he described his style of play, and it makes for interesting reading.
Fernandes explained: “As a player, I think I’m someone who runs, fights for the ball and tries to win every duel. I always try to help my teammates and the club, and do the best I can.
“I want to try to play football, and enjoy football. I don’t want to just run and try to score, but to try and play good football.”
This is exactly what Manchester United fans want out of a midfielder.
A player who will battle and fight, and one who is also heavily invested in playing attractive, attacking football.

Manchester United will want the deal for Mateus Fernandes to start accelerating soon.
Ederson will not be available for the start of pre-season after his late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.
Mateus Fernandes missed out on the Portugal squad, so there is an opportunity to get him to Carrington for day one of pre-season.
United are expected to return in the second week of July, now less than a month away.
With this target in mind, we would expect the negotiations for Fernandes to step up shortly.
