Final straw for Harry Kane could push striker towards Manchester United

Harry Kane has been linked with a move to Manchester United in stronger terms over the past few weeks.

A report via The Sun this week claimed United have received encouraging signs from third parties connected to Kane that the striker would be open to a move.

ESPN report he is on United’s shortlist, and last night’s Champions League elimination could push Kane closer to Old Trafford.

Spurs were eliminated in the last 16 by AC Milan after a 0-0 draw at home in a tepid, dour performance which you expect from an Antonio Conte side nowadays.

Could be final straw for Harry Kane

Harry Kane looked sick and miserable at full-time as Tottenham crashed out in front of their home fans without scoring a goal in either leg, having lost 1-0 in Milan.

Tottenham were not expected to win the competition, but they would have fancied themselves to get past Milan over two legs, and take a run in the competition.

Losing in the first knockout round is a poor outcome, as Manchester United experienced against Atletico Madrid last season.

This exit confirms yet another trophyless season for Kane, with Tottenham crashing out of the FA Cup at the hands of Sheffield United.

Kane is at a side who are not even competing for trophies now. If they were getting to semi-finals and finals and falling short, he could kid himself that they were close, and it would be worth him sticking around.

This season Tottenham have not been at all competitive, and have to now cling on to try and make fourth place this season. But even if they do, what then?

“What is the point in the top four, if you are going to perform like this in the Champions League?”, former Tottenham striker Peter Crouch told BT Sport after their defeat.

Staying at Spurs just repeats the cycle for Kane. Last night’s defeat might be the final straw, prompting him to move on.

Manchester United can offer Kane a new challenge

Manchester United have fresh direction under Erik ten Hag. Forget the freak weekend defeat, United are unbeaten in 19 of the last 21 games in all competitions and have won a trophy already this season.

United need a striker, and Kane could be a perfect fit, one who has 201 Premier League goals already, 268 for Tottenham in total, and is a World Cup golden boot winner from 2018. (It should also be pointed out that the 2022 golden boot winner Kylian Mbappe suffered an exit of his own with PSG last night too).

A move to Old Trafford can give Kane some excitement, something new, fresh, and a belief he can end his career long trophy drought.

It worked for Teddy Sheringham. Kane just needs to be brave enough to take the next step. Last night’s Champions League exit might have helped him make up his mind.
