Fabrizio Romano shares key update on Facundo Pellistri’s Manchester United future

Manchester United have started the season with a win but the transfer window continues amid questions over Facundo Pellistri’s future.

Erik ten Hag saw one of his new Manchester United signings make the difference in Friday’s win over Fulham.

Joshua Zirkzee came off the bench to score the only goal of the game, prodding home Alejandro Garnacho’s cross.

Zirkzee is one of four senior additions this summer with Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui also arriving.

United still want more incoming business but may need to move some players out before the summer deadline.

Scott McTominay has been linked away whilst Rangers are keen on midfielder Hannibal Mejbri as the window nears its end.

Facundo Pellistri latest

The most advanced exit appears to surround winger Facundo Pellistri.

Reports from Italy just a few days ago suggested that Bologna want to sign Pellistri just weeks after selling Zirkzee to United.

If Bologna want to sign Pellistri then they need to move quickly.

Fabrizio Romano now claims that Panathinaikos are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Pellistri.

Romano states that this would be a permanent move and ‘negotiations are ongoing’ in the hope of striking a deal.

Pellistri’s agent claimed interest from Panathinaikos in June and that deal now looks to be moving forward.

The 22-year-old joined United from Penarol for £9million in 2020 but has only ever managed 25 first-team appearances at Old Trafford.

Loans with Alaves and Granada have not taken Pellistri any closer to a regular first-team role and a move to Greece now seems to be moving closer.

Pellistri came off the bench as a right back against Manchester City last weekend but that experiment didn’t quite work as Bernardo Silva beat him to score at the back post.

One Uruguayan out, one Uruguayan in?

This move will somewhat remind supporters of Federico Macheda, who spent four years with Panathinaikos between 2018 and 2022.

Pellistri will hope to get his career back on track in Greece should the move go through, but he looks set to miss out on a reunion with Manuel Ugarte.

United are hopeful of signing Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain after weeks of speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future.

Pellistri and Ugarte featured together for Uruguay at Copa America this summer but that connection won’t be heading to Manchester.

Pellistri heading out may just help provide some room for United to bring in Ugarte this summer, with United needing to offload some fringe players before the window shuts.
