Fabrizio Romano issues update on when Wout Weghorst will undergo Manchester United medical
According to The Athletic, Besiktas will receive a £2.5million compensation payment from the Red Devils to the Netherlands international’s season-long loan spell with the Istanbul-based side prematurely.
The Athletic report: “Besiktas will receive the payment directly from United rather than Burnley, Weghorst’s parent club.”
Besiktas had been waiting to line up a replacement before allowing Weghorst to leave. The club are in talks with Al Nassr’s Vincent Aboubakar and are hopeful of resigning the Cameroon international.
Weghorst played 17 times for Besiktas, scoring eight goals and contributing four assists.
Having joined Burnley from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg last January, Weghorst scored two goals in 20 Premier League appearances for the Clarets, but he couldn’t prevent the Turf Moor outfit from getting relegated to the Championship.
With the 19-time Netherlands international not keen on plying his trade in the second tier of English football, he spent the first half of the 2022-23 campaign with Besiktas, but he now looks Old Trafford bound.
The towering striker scored two goals against eventual champions Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals.
With no major funds available in the January transfer window after splashing out a club record outlay in the summer, Erik ten Hag was forced to explore the loan market to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo.
United must register Weghorst by 12pm on Friday for him to be available for the Manchester derby on Saturday.
