Manchester United are moving closer to a deal for centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.

Raphael Varane’s replacement at Manchester United is expected to be Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Along with Joshua Zirkzee, the transfer is expected to be confirmed once the Dutch involvement at Euro 2024 concludes.

De Ligt has emerged as a cheaper and more experienced alternative to Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who is said to be ‘agitated‘ at his move to the club collapsing.

Matthijs de Ligt being discussed

Matthijs de Ligt is focused on joining Manchester United and leaving Bayern Munich behind.

Fabrizio Romano explains that he does not expect personal terms to be an issue for the Netherlands defender.

Speaking via his podcast, Romano says that term of a fee are still being agreed with Bayern.

He said: “De Ligt really wants to feel important, really wants to play. Manchester United are offering this kind of solution.

“De Ligt is only negotiating with United, so despite the links we had with Paris Saint-Germain, full focus on Manchester United for Matthijs de Ligt. And now it’s going to be time to agree on deal structure with Bayern.

“Manchester United want to include add-ons as part of the proposal for Matthijs de Ligt, but for sure they are confident to advance in the next days.

“Manchester United got their green light from Matthijs de Ligt in terms of project, contract, so personal terms are not going to be an issue.”

Centre-back a big issue for Manchester United

Centre-back is a big issue for Manchester United, due to Varane’s exit. This was a position where Manchester United battled injuries last season.

There are questions over the futures of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, while Jonny Evans has not yet put pen to paper on a new deal.

Lisandro Martinez suffered multiple injuries last season and is spending his summer competing at the Copa America.

Matthijs de Ligt has had his own injury issues too, and Manchester United might need one more centre-back in addition to the Dutchman to really feel confident in terms of cover.
