Fabrizio Romano has now spoken out on the future of former Manchester United player Mason Greenwood at Marseille after his career revival in France with the club.
Mason Greenwood has been at Marseille since 2024 after the former Manchester United youth academy product’s future became untenable at Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old ex-England player had spent the 2023-24 loan at Getafe before he returned to United, with the Red Devils subsequently offloading him permanently.
Marseille landed Greenwood from United in a deal worth £26.6m and the former Red Devils talent was handed a lifeline opportunity away from the Premier League club.
Greenwood has since become a key player for Marseille under manager Roberto De Zerbi and has impressed for the Ligue 1 outfit since his transfer to the club.

Fabrizio Romano on Man Utd’s clause for Mason Greenwood and Marseille’s position on the former Red Devils player
Mason Greenwood produced a sensational performance for Marseille last week after the ex-Manchester United player netted an impressive four times against Le Havre.
The former Three Lions forward, who is under contract with Marseille until 2029, has netted seven times and registered four assists in 11 matches so far this season.
United’s sale of Greenwood in 2024 included a hefty 50 per cent sell-on clause, which would provide the Red Devils with additional cash if Marseille sold the player.
Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that there were teams “prepared to pay big money” for Greenwood in the summer, but Marseille refused to sanction the sale.
“So, in the case of future sale of Mason Greenwood, Man United will receive 50 per cent of the transfer fee,” he said on his YouTube channel.
“So, they still control 50 per cent and [there] could be big money if – and when – Olympique Marseille will decide to sell Mason Greenwood.
“Already last summer, there were clubs prepared to pay big money for Mason Greenwood and Marseille said, ‘No, the player stays here. He’s too important.’
Fabrizio Romano on what senior Marseille figures have been saying about former Man Utd attacker Mason Greenwood
Clubs in Saudi Arabia and Barcelona have reportedly been linked in the past with Greenwood, who last played for United in 2022 in a 1-0 win over West Ham.
Romano has explained that Marseille president Pablo Longoria, sporting director Medhi Benatia and manager Roberto De Zerbi all hold Greenwood in high regard.
“This was the decision [not to sell Greenwood] of the president, Pablo Longoria, of the director, Medhi Benatia, showing ambition,” he continued.
“And also of the coach, Roberto De Zerbi, who considers Mason Greenwood as a crucial player.
“But remember, if Greenwood [were to] leave one day, Man United will have 50 – five [and] zero – per cent sell-on clause.
“So, more money coming, and that could be really important in terms of Financial Fair Play and future signings for Manchester United.”
Greenwood has scored 29 times and registered 10 assists in 47 matches across all competitions for Marseille since his exit from Old Trafford.
