Roy Keane admitted to Gary Neville that he is far from convinced by the role that a first-team Manchester United player is playing under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim and his men are on the verge of returning to Premier League action, with Manchester United hosting 10th-place Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils climbed to ninth place in the Premier League table after United defeated Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in a sensational performance last Sunday.

United’s result over Liverpool allowed Amorim to pick up back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since he replaced Erik ten Hag at the Red Devils.

The Red Devils have received a much-needed boost in momentum after their performance against Liverpool and United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Gary Neville tells Roy Keane his feelings on Ruben Amorim and Man Utd star Mason Mount

Ruben Amorim’s tactical system at Manchester United saw a key change in last Sunday’s match against Liverpool, with Benjamin Sesko dropping to the bench.

Summer signing Benjamin Sesko had scored in back-to-back matches against Brentford and Sunderland, but the United striker failed to make the starting XI.

United manager Amorim instead opted for a front three of Mason Mount, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, which proved incredibly effective at Anfield.

Mason Mount was initially deployed in a false nine-type role of attack against the Reds and Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha played in the two No 10 roles.

Amorim is a big fan of Mount and Gary Neville admitted that it is clear that the 40-year-old United head coach wants him to fit in the attack with Mbeumo and Cunha.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show, he said: “He’s got Sesko at £80m, but he loves Mason Mount, doesn’t he?

“You can tell he wants Mount in with Mbeumo and Cunha.”

Mason Mount had a steady showing against Liverpool last weekend and the former Chelsea ace came off in the second half for United striker Benjamin Sesko.

The 26-year-old former England international has played a more prominent role at Old Trafford this season after enjoying a consistent run of form at the club.

Mount’s Old Trafford spell has been curtailed by injuries since his Chelsea move and Keane is still not sold on what the United No 7 can offer after his “really poor” stats.

“That’s a head-scratcher [the Mount situation], I think,” Keane told Neville.

“He’s doing well to get in the starting United team, Mount.”

The 54-year-old United legend added: “A lot of managers have loved him over the years, he was the main man with England for a while, Chelsea of course and now obviously the manager wants to put him in.

“But you go back to stats as an attacking player. At United, his stats when he’s played are really poor.

“It’s not as if you’re going, yeah, I can see he’s getting a lot of assists, his stats are really poor.”

Mount has made eight appearances for the Red Devils in the 2025-26 campaign and the former Blues star has netted once and picked up one assist for United so far.
