Exciting left-back ‘Ruben Amorim wants to sign’ wins prestigious award scooped by Rasmus Hojlund in 2023

With goals suddenly flowing up front, the obvious spot for Manchester United to make a signing in January is at left-back.

While Ruben Amorim is blown away by right-sided options Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, his plans on the left remain uncertain.

Tyrell Malacia looked off the pace on his return last week, while Luke Shaw is being used as a centre-back. And by now, United know not to rely on either Malacia or Shaw anyway.

As the club assess the potential budget for January, a left-sided player for the wing-back spot is increasingly liked to be targeted.

Manchester United want Patrick Dorgu

Manchester United are being tipped to target Lecce standout Patrick Dorgu, a regular for the Serie A side.

Dorgu began his career in the academy of Danish club Nordsjaelland, before joining Lecce in 2022 and going on to make his pro debut.

Now a full international with Denmark, Dorgu has racked up 45 Serie A appearances, scoring five goals.

Dorgu could be well-suited to Ruben Amorim’s wing-back system. He began his career as a winger, before shifting to left-back.

According to Italian journalist Gerardo Fasano, via Area Napoli has made a bold claim, commenting: “Manchester United, on the specific instructions of their coach Amorim, would like to make a move for Patrick Dorgu.

“The English club would need a left-back and the Dane would be the ideal profile. The incoming offer is between thirty and thirty-five million plus bonuses that are easily achievable, already in this transfer session.”

At approximately £30 million, Dorgu would be an investment, one who could provide value at just 20-years-old. He would be more expensive than the unusually cheap Noussair Mazraoui, and just over half what United paid for Aaron Wan-Bissaka in 2019.

Patrick Dorgu scoops award

United’s interest in Patrick Dorgu is all the more notable this week because the Dane has just succeeded Rasmus Hojlund in winning an award.

Dorgu has scooped the Danish Talent of the Year Award for 2024, and was presented with it before Lecce’s 1-1 draw with Juventus at the weekend.

Rasmus Hojlund was the winner of the award in 2023 after his superb year, clinching a move from Atalanta to Manchester United. Dorgu has now won his, just as talk of a potential move to United heats up.

Dorgu signed a contract extension with Lecce earlier this year, signing a deal that runs to 2029.
