Erik ten Hag identifies two key positions for Man United in January, Sir Jim Ratcliffe willing to back him

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly already identified two key positions that he would like to improve on in the January transfer window.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United currently sit sixth in the Premier League just five points outside of the coveted top four places, which would guarantee a Champions League spot.

After a dismal start to the season, things looked bleak for the 53-year-old with the frantic 4-3 defeat to FC Copenhagen adding to the pressure.

However, a 1-0 win over Luton Town on the weekend, thanks to a goal from the ‘technically brilliant’ Victor Lindelof, was seemingly enough to buy him more time.

Transfer targets set

Now, according to a report from The Sun, the Dutchman has set out the two positions he is desperate to improve in the side ahead of the winter transfer window.

The report states that a forward who can play on either flank and a right-back are Ten Hag’s priorities going into the new year with the Red Devils struggling for goals from wide areas.

With Antony struggling to perform and Jadon Sancho set for a move away from Old Trafford, United currently do not have a reliable final third option to start from the right-hand side.

Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo are options for the right winger role but Ten Hag doesn’t yet seem able to trust the pair for such an important role.

In terms of wanting a right-back, this could point to uncertainty over Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s contract, or a possible desire to utilise Diogo Dalot more on the left.

Ratcliffe to back Ten Hag

According to the same report, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, 71, is keen on backing the Dutchman and is willing to give him time and finances to turn around United’s season.

A source reportedly told The Sun: “January will be a big month for United. The deal involving Sir Jim should be done by then, and this will free up funds for Ten Hag to reset his squad.”

What isn’t clear, however, is whether United has the funds to be able to afford such important purchases. No more stop-gap deals can be targeted, United either need to pursue their first-choice targets or hold off until the summer window.
