The need to replace Casemiro has seen Manchester United linked to an array of midfielders, including Atalanta’s Ederson.
Michael Carrick has prioritised a midfield duo of Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo since becoming Manchester United’s interim head coach in January.
A decision over Casemiro’s future was made by then, with the Brazilian veteran set to leave Old Trafford at the end of his contract. That hasn’t stopped Carrick from selecting Casemiro as a regular in his midfield.
With Carrick considered the frontrunner to remain head coach, the 44-year-old won’t be able to be as reliant on the five-time Champions League winner. United must evaluate the market and find a quality replacement this summer.

What are your thoughts on Ederson being linked to Man Utd? Is he what we need?
Ederson camp want Man Utd deal
United have as many as 10 midfield targets ahead of the summer transfer window.
Players like Aurelien Tchouameni, Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba are at the top of the list – but there are other targets as United need more than one midfield addition.
Further down on the list is Ederson, who is enjoying a strong end to what could be his final season at Atalanta.
A new report from Sky Sport Switzerland claims Ederson is expected to leave Atalanta this summer, with United among the clubs closely monitoring his situation.
It is understood that the most concrete interest at present is coming from other Serie A clubs, but Ederson dreams of a move to England.
Moreover, it is stressed that Ederson’s entourage has given their approval for a potential move to Old Trafford.
That suggests Ederson’s agents are trying to engineer a £45m transfer to United, which is worth being mindful of when reading reports on his future.
Atalanta have not received any formal offers for Ederson as of yet.
