Mason Greenwood is already proving himself to be a ‘stand out’ talent at Getafe after leaving Premier League giants Manchester United over the summer.
Playing first-team football for the first time since his arrest and his suspension from Manchester United back in 2022, Mason Greenwood clearly hasn’t lost that dazzling natural talent during his year-and-a-half-long absence from the professional game.
The England international needed only nine minutes to make a game-changing impact on his La Liga debut, his run and shot earning the corner from which Getafe scored their winning goal in Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Osasuna.

Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood impresses
“He hasn’t played in such a long time. But when he got the ball…” Terry Gibson, who himself spent time at Manchester United in 1980s, explains on El Tel and Jon’s La Liga Weekly podcast; Greenwood’s trickery and guile lighting up the end of a goal-filled but rather functional contest.
“I’m going to be honest, in this game there was a lot of average football. It was fundamental football; get the ball forward, knock downs…
“All of a sudden, (Greenwood) came on and started running at people with the ball, showing a trick or two. He did stand out.”
“He had one run and dribble, and a shot that was blocked which lead to the corner and then the winning goal.”
‘The best player Getafe have ever had’
It will take Greenwood some time to rediscover the sharpness that made him such a threat at Manchester United – he scored 17 goals during a staggering breakthrough season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019/20 – but this brief cameo did little to dampen suggestions that the 21-year-old could blossom into a genuine match-winner at a famously workaday Getafe outfit.
“In the club’s offices and in the dressing room, Getafe still believe Greenwood will need time to get up to speed physically and settle in Madrid,” reporter Guillermo Rai tells The Athletic.
“They do not deny that he could be the best player they have had in their history.”
