Manchester United have struck an agreement to sign Andrey Santos and Ineos agreed to include an interesting clause in the deal.

Just one day before pre-season training begins at Carrington, Manchester United have agreed a £48m deal to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea.

According to David Ornstein, the Brazilian has been given permission to travel to Manchester and complete a medical before finalising his move.

Not only did United agree to some financial add-ons within the transfer deal, there is also an interesting sell-on clause.

Man United agree to Andrey Santos sell-on clause

Ornstein’s report claims that United have struck an agreement to pay a guaranteed £48 million for Andrey Santos, with an extra £2 million in “easily achievable” add-ons, taking the total fee to £50 million.

United have agreed to pay Chelsea’s full valuation of the 22-year-old midfielder, and the Blues also insisted on a 10% sell-on clause.

The clause means that Chelsea will bank 10% of any future sale of Santos. It is unclear if the clause refers to 10% of the entire fee, or just any profit on the £48 million that United are paying.

While this is fairly common practice in football transfers, Chelsea’s insistence on the clause suggests they are backing Santos to succeed.

Chelsea are aware that Santos’ value could soar at United if he is successful, and therefore they want to make sure they earn a chunk of his future transfer fee if he is sold on as a superstar.

What is your advice to Ineos on the state of the transfer window so far?

Andrey Santos is a perfect Ineos signing

From previous transfer windows, United fans have learned that Ineos prefer to sign young players with high potential.

That is the perfect description of Santos, who was not given many opportunities to shine at Chelsea.

At 22 years old, Santos is still at the very start of his career and he has plenty of years ahead of him to fulfil his potential. If he does, his value will skyrocket.

That has been another policy within Ineos’ transfer business, to sign players who can be sold on.

United’s transfer sales have been nothing short of terrible compared to their Premier League rivals. Ineos are now targeting valuable stars who should protect their value as they age and develop at Old Trafford.

In a few years’ time, the £48m fee paid for Santos may look like a bargain, and that’s what Chelsea are fearful of.
