The Ruben Amorim era has begun at Manchester United though the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town was a little frustrating.
United took an almost instant lead through Marcus Rashford but could only take a point against the Tractor Boys.
United fans will not be blaming Amorim given that he has only just arrived but it’s clear that he has a huge job on his hands.
Amorim wants United to play with more control when leading and the evolution of his United side will take some time.
The 39-year-old will expect arrivals in the transfer market in 2025, and attacking options will be wanted.
Chelsea boss on Manchester United target
Amorim played a 3-4-3 system at Sporting and has now brought that same approach to Old Trafford.
Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes lined up as number 10’s, supporting goalscorer Rashford in attack.
Robbie Savage has questioned Garnacho’s role under Amorim and we could see the new boss focus on signing central attacking players over wingers.
Reports earlier in November suggested that United are interested in Christopher Nkunku amid claims he is unsettled at Chelsea due to his playing time at Stamford Bridge.
Nkunku has only started one Premier League game this season whilst totalling just 164 minutes of league action.
The 27-year-old has essentially become Chelsea’s star man in the UEFA Conference League – and that just isn’t good enough for a player who cost £53million in 2023.
United may be watching Nkunku’s developments very closely but Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has played down a potential exit.
As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, Maresca has offered a blunt verdict that Chelsea plan to keep Nkunku and ‘absolutely’ don’t want him to leave.
Nkunku may not be too impressed with that verdict given his lack of minutes, but this may be a difficult deal for United to pull off in January.
Nkunku versatility may appeal to United
The Frenchman hasn’t really lived up to his billing at Chelsea and part of that is down to injuries.
Nkunku suffered a number of injury blows last season and that may put United off to some extent.
One thing Nkunku does have in his favour is his versatility centrally, as he can play any of the three attacking roles in Amorim’s attack.
A versatile player who can operate as a number 10 or striker may appeal to Amorim, allowing some flexibility in attack.
Nkunku was a superstar in the Bundesliga and he has still managed to score 10 goals in 18 games this season.
There is quality in Nkunku’s locker and he may be one to watch for the summer window – especially if he continues to be on the fringes at Chelsea.
