Man Utd talent has Lionel Messi’s backing but Robbie Savage fears he doesn’t suit Ruben Amorim’s plans

Manchester United started the Ruben Amorim with a point having drawn 1-1 away at Ipswich Town on Sunday afternoon.

After three weeks of waiting, Manchester United fans finally got a first look at Ruben Amorim over the weekend.

Amorim was appointed as United boss on November 1 but waited until the international break to leave Sporting.

That only served to heighten the expectation levels and United made a dream start as Marcus Rashford scored an early opener against Ipswich Town.

Amorim felt that United showed a lack of control from there though as Ipswich claimed a 1-1 draw – and could have taken the win.

This was an underwhelming United performance but little blame goes to Amorim given that he has had just a few days with his new squad.

Robbie Savage questions Manchester United ace under Ruben Amorim

Amorin is still learning about his United players and just how they can adapt to his system.

Amorim played a 3-4-3 system at Sporting and brought that approach to United for Sunday’s clash with Ipswich.

We would anticipate that formation being used moving forward and some players may not fit perfectly.

Alejandro Garnacho is a perfect example and the Argentinian had a fairly quiet afternoon against Ipswich.

Deployed as one of the number 10’s behind Rashford, Garnacho was pretty much anonymous in a frustrating display.

Pundit and former United youth talent Robbie Savage has now told BBC Sport that he thinks Garnacho simply doesn’t suit Amorim’s system.

Savage would rather see Garnacho as a wing back than as a number 10 moving forward, something Amorim may need to consider in the future too.

“I don’t think Ruben Amorim’s system suits Alejandro Garnacho. He was used as one of the number tens. I think he is better as one of the wing backs,” said Savage.

Alejandro Garnacho may need to reinvent himself despite Lionel Messi backing

Garnacho is one of United’s top young talents and the 20-year-old has been backed for a huge future.

Lionel Messi has even backed Garnacho by voting him third for the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best talent in the world.

Garnacho came behind Barcelona duo Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi in Messi’s voting but it’s clear that he rates Garnacho highly.

There is a harsh reality though and it’s that Garnacho may need to reinvent himself in order to become a key man under Amorim.

Garnacho either needs to improve his defensive game to become a wing back or learn to make an impact from central areas whilst supporting Rashford up top.

Neither role is particularly natural for Garnacho but Amorim simply doesn’t play with natural wingers.

That leaves Garnacho in a tricky spot but Amorim will be looking to make sure that his talent and potential doesn’t go to waste at Old Trafford.
