Bayern Munich reap consequences of their De Ligt stance in a painful way, club ‘irritated’ at transfer collapse

Bayern Munich have failed in attempts to sign centre-back target Jonathan Tah, but Manchester United fans do not need to panic.

In the rare years when Bayern Munich have not won the league, they have often responded by signing players from the team which have finished above them.

This was their objective this window, lining up centre-back Jonathan Tah from reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Tah was viewed as a replacement centre-back for expected outgoing defender Matthijs de Ligt, a key target for Manchester United.

Bayern’s Tah deal off

Bayer Leverkusen issued Bayern with a deadline to meet their demands for Jonathan Tah. And soon afterwards, talks broke down.

German outlet Kicker report Bayern’s move for Tah is off. Bayern are reportedly ‘irritated’, believing they had a verbal agreement with Leverkusen over a fee.

Bayern were simply not able to meet Leverkusen’s deadline, which caught them by surprise.

Club chief Uli Hoeness has explained Bayern must sell before they can buy, and after rejecting Manchester United’s double bid for Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt, they had no funds to spent on Tah before the imposed deadline.

There are other sales Bayern are open to making too, with the German giants experiencing a similar issue to Manchester United in terms of not being happy with the offers they have received, or simply getting none at all.

Manchester United did submit a sizeable double bid for Mazraoui and De Ligt last week, which was turned down, catching United off-guard.

Bayern believed they could secure a higher price. United are waiting them out. And these games have backfired on the German club, who have now missed out on a target of their own.

De Ligt deal still possible

Bayern missing out on Tah led to the immediate question, would the future of Matthijs de Ligt be impacted by this?

Kicker report De Ligt’s future is unaffected. His situation is ‘separate’ to Tah’s, and he is still on the market amid his desire to leave Bayern.

Interestingly, Sky Sports reported United made a check on Tah’s situation in July, although this is not expected to lead to anything.

Bayern still have targets to acquire, and will likely have a centre-back in mind they can turn to. Their need is still sell to buy.
