Bayern Munich are preparing an audacious January bid for Manchester United defender Raphael Varane, according to reports.

Erik ten Hag has reinstated Raphael Varane into the Manchester United first team in recent weeks after it was beginning to look bleak for the French defender.

Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire were starting ahead of the former Real Madrid defender and Varane was understandably becoming more and more irate as the weeks went by.

Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern Munich were credited with an interest in the French defender but that interest has gone quiet in recent weeks, until now.

Bayern preparing offer

According to a report from Spanish outlet SPORT, the German side are battling with Varane’s former side Madrid asthey see the Frenchman as the preferred option.

Giorgio Scalvini and Goncalo Inacio, two players who have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, are also reportedly attracting interest from Los Blancos but Varane is reportedly the preference.

Due to Varane’s contract expiring at the end of next season, Madrid prefer the Frenchman due to the financial outlay needed to sign the 30-year-old would be cheaper than the other two younger options.

The reason why the Bavarian side, who are willing to offer £17 million, are believed to be keen on the Frenchman is because Kim-Min Jae and Noussair Mazraoui will be missing for a month due to the Africa Cup Of Nations.

Bayern director Christoph Freund has even confirmed that the German side will dip into the market, as quoted by the same report, he said: “We are short of personnel behind, so in the coming weeks we have work.”

United have to keep Varane

Varane and Casemiro’s future certainly look up in the air but out of the two of them, it is looking more likely that the Brazilian midfielder will be the man to leave the club.

The French defender has proven this season that he can be relied upon whereas Casemiro, before his injury that has kept him out since November, has struggled.

With Kobbie Mainoo breaking through, the need for defensive midfield depth is not so urgent and there’s a good chance United could recoup a fair amount of £60 million that they spent on the 31-year-old if clubs from the Saudi Pro League formalise their interest.
