Manchester United are reported to be negotiating with Inter Milan over a move for goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Gazzetta dello Sport report Inter Milan are keen to tie up Andre Onana’s sale before the end of the month, while Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag also wants him in for pre-season.

It could be a very sudden goodbye for the Cameroon international, who began June preparing for the Champions League final with Inter.

The two clubs are negotiating a deal worth £42 million plus add-ons.

Andre Onana expected departure prompts split reaction

Andre Onana has only been at Inter a year, so while there has been admiration for him, there has not been enough time for fans to get too attached.

Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Albert Fontana told FCInter1908 that Inter must sign a high quality replacement, but he also takes a pragmatic view that it is smart to cash in.

He said: “If a goalkeeper changes, a player up to the task must arrive, prepared to wear such a heavy shirt.

“Considering that Onana arrived on a free transfer, his sale would be all capital gain, and in today’s football there are also these parameters to consider. Companies need these operations to make the market and move forward.”

Inter want to fund a deal to sign Romelu Lukaku permanently, and there are also areas of the squad to improve. While they reached the Champions League final, they still finished 18 points behind Serie A winners Napoli.

Former Nerazzuri defender Graziano Bini told FCInterNews that he fears a sale will just push Inter further behind.

He warned: “I would do everything to keep Onana back. There aren’t many goalkeepers of his level around. Losing him would mean weakening.

“The Champions League final only disguised a disappointing season in the league.”

Manchester United meanwhile hope Onana will help the Red Devils close the gap on City, having finished 14 points behind the league leaders in 2022/23.
