£35m ace is making a ‘very good choice’ with Manchester United exit imminent

Donny van de Beek will make a ‘very good choice’ if he leaves Premier League giants Manchester United for Eintracht Frankfurt in the January transfer window.

That is according to Simon Cziommer, a man well placed to pass judgement given that he played in both the Bundesliga and the Eredivisie, with Donny van de Beek now set to follow in his career path.

The former Ajax ace, a £35 million signing by Manchester United in the summer of 2020, jetted out to Germany following Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield. Van de Beek is set to undergo a medical. He will join Eintracht Frankfurt on loan, with a £13 million option-to-buy clause in his contract (Fabrizio Romano).

And Cziommer is backing Van de Beek to rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s best young midfielders under Dino Toppmoller at the Commerzbank Arena.

Van de Beek is finally leaving Manchester United

“A good choice, a very good choice,” Cziommer tells Viaplay. “(Frankfurt) play with a lot of pressure on the opponent. They can run the ball well, and I think he is a good addition to the squad, especially to create depth. (They need to utilise) his strength and get into the box.

“The players around him are made to play the passes into his feet, or into the space.”

The success of Mario Gotze at Frankfurt certainly bodes well for Van de Beek. Like United’s seldom-seen Dutchman, Gotze is a player who, while lacking in physicality, thrives when picking up possession pockets of space in and around the penalty area.

Cedric van der Gun, once of Dortmund, Utrecht and Swansea City, is keen to point out the similarities between Van de Beek’s situation and that of Davy Klaassen, the former Everton flop rebuilding his reputation in Germany at Werder Bremen.

Bundesliga bound

“You had Klaassen. He did well there (in Germany), so maybe that’s a good example for (Van de Beek),” Van der Gun argues. “But, for him it is especially important, after so many injuries and minutes on the bench, that you can enjoy playing again.

“He just has to play good football and the Bundesliga remains a very nice competition.”

Van de Beek has played only two minutes of Premier League football all season under Erik ten Hag. He recently spoke out about his desire to play more regular football, after summer moves to the likes of Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, FC Lorient and Genoa failed to materialise.
