Donny Van de Beek is set to join Eintracht Frankfurt on loan from Manchester United in January with the Premier League misfit ‘excited’ about his switch to the Bundesliga.

After reported summer moves to the likes of Genoa, Real Sociedad, Galatasaray and Lorient failed to materialise, Donny Van de Beek is finally set to leave the Old Trafford bench behind.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United’s £35 million forgotten man will join Eintracht Frankfurt on an initial loan deal. Should he impress in Germany, the 2022 Europa League winners will have the option to sign Van de Beek permanently for around £13 million.

Jan Aage Fjortoft, the former Norway international who played in England for Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Barnsley, spoke to Van de Beek about his impending switch to the Bundesliga after Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Liverpool.

Van de Beek set for Manchester United exit

“Had a good quick chat with Van de Beek in the corridors of Anfield tonight. I told him what a great club Eintracht Frankfurt is, the good people in and around the club, and told him he will love it there,” Fjortoft, who now works as a reporter for ViaPlay, writes on X.

“He is excited about it! Traveling there tomorrow it seems! Please give him a great welcome, friends.”

As Fjortoft alludes to, Van de Beek is expected to undergo a medical with Frankfurt on Monday. Despite being a key part of the Ajax team who came within a whisker of the Champions League final under Erik ten Hag back in 2019, Van de Beek remains something of a persona non grata at United. He’s played only 21 minutes of football in all competitions this term.

Just two of those have come in the Premier League.

Old Trafford exit inevitable

“It’s about him playing football week-in, week-out,” United and Dutch legend Jaap Stam told Voetbal Nieuws of Van de Beek. “Is he going to do that under Ten Hag? I don’t think so.

That’s a shame, because Donny is a good football player. However, the coach makes choices, and you have to dare to choose for yourself as a player.

“(Donny should think) ‘maybe I should make the move somewhere else so that I can play’.”
