It’s an honour for any footballer to score in a rivalry, and Manchester United have had many scorers at Anfield in their 99 meetings with Liverpool over the years.
Manchester United take on Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, looking for their fourth win of the season.
Ruben Amorim is seeking back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since becoming United head coach. His side face a Liverpool team that has been beaten in their last three matches across all competitions.
It’s a fixture that presents an opportunity for every player to put themselves in the history books. United In Focus previously took a look at United’s top five memorable moments at Anfield, but now we are diving into the club’s top scorers against Liverpool.

George Wall – 9 goals
After signing for United in 1906, George Wall spent 13 years at the club and boasted an impressive record against Liverpool. Playing as an ‘Outside Left’, Wall scored nine goals against Liverpool, making him United’s top goalscorer in the history of the fixture. He made 12 appearances against Liverpool and won seven of those matches.
Stan Pearson – 8 goals
Stan Pearson played for United from 1936 to 1954, making 16 appearances against Liverpool. He scored eight goals in those matches and claimed eight wins over the Merseyside outfit. Pearson scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 league win over Liverpool at Maine Road. It was the last hat-trick a United player scored against Liverpool until Dimitar Berbatov’s hat-trick in 2010.
George Best – 7 goals
Born in Belfast, George Best would go on to become one of the greatest players in United’s history, winning the European Cup in 1968 under Sir Matt Busby. Best made 20 appearances against Liverpool, winning seven and scoring seven goals. His stand-out performance against Liverpool came in 1967 when he scored both goals in a 2-1 win for United.
Marcus Rashford – 7 goals
The only current player on the list is Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan at Barcelona. All seven of his goals against Liverpool have come at Old Trafford.
Jimmy Turnbull – 7 goals
Unlike the other players on this list, Jimmy Turnbull made a limited number of appearances against Liverpool, but that doesn’t take away from the fact he is among the top goalscorers in the fixture’s history. Turnbull made six appearances against Liverpool and scored seven goals. He played for United between 1907 and 1910 and won the First Division title in 1908 and the FA Cup a year later.
