Fresh takeover talk has sprung up after the awful start to the season, which has seen six goals conceded, two defeats and only an own goal to United’s name.
Billionaire Elon Musk has caused a stir after he tweeted that he was planning to put together a bid to buy the club from the Glazers.
There were protests against the Glazers in the away end at Brentford and the prospect of more to come against Liverpool on Monday night.
As quickly as he made his claim, Musk clarified that he was joking and has no plans to buy any clubs in any sport with his enormous wealth.
He is not the only high-profile figure to discuss buying United on a whim, with Conor McGregor doing so in April 2021 amid the Super League furore.

Musk also added that if he were to buy any team, it would be United, saying that they were his favourite team when he was younger.
That underlines the club’s historic pull but there has yet to be a credible bid to buy the club from the Glazers as the malaise continues.
That is one problem in the way of a potential change of ownership.
There are only a handful of people or groups in the world who can get near the kind of offer it would take to convince the Glazers to sell.
Manchester City and Newcastle United have state-owned models and United would be wise not to go down that line.
A billionaire such as Musk buying the club makes for great headlines, but it would also be a lurch towards the unknown and a risk the club would surely never take.
The sale of Chelsea shows the opportunity could be out there but it is not close to happening right now, as the frustration continues on and off the pitch.
