The discourse around Manchester United is sadly all too predictable. Another defeat has led to more manager rumours.
Nobody is happy with how the 2023/24 season has gone at Manchester United, and new investors at the club has only added to speculation over Erik ten Hag.
The latest rumour comes from France, linking Champions League winning manager Zinedine Zidane.
Footmercato reports Zidane is the top choice at Ineos to replace Ten Hag, in the event of a change.
Rolling eyes at Zinedine Zidane claims
Zinedine Zidane has achieved incredible feats in his managerial career at a star-studded Real Madrid.
But there is not enough there to suggest he is a seamless fit for the Ineos project at Manchester United, which requires a rebuild.
Zidane is a manager who could make an instant impact on a short-term basis. He has managed Raphael Varane and Casemiro before, yet both players could be on their way out of the club.
If Zidane is the chosen man, then so be it. But you won’t get too many fans who are too excited just yet about the Frenchman.
Instead all these rumours do is generate the ‘roll eyes’ feeling, where you think, ‘here we go again’.
Zidane has been linked several times to Manchester United, so at this stage, it is hard to feel that this time it actually feels real.
Zidane linked to United before
The Times claimed earlier this season that Zinedine Zidane was high on Manchester United’s list, earlier in the season, when the team’s form really took a nosedive.
It has taken just one defeat in 2024 for the rumours to restart.
A report in The Times in 2021 linked Zidane as a replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It didn’t happen then, and seems even more unlikely now.
We’ll believe it when we see it.
