Why Harry Maguire is right to feel ‘shocked’ after being excluded from England’s World Cup squad

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been omitted from the England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Thomas Tuchel will name his 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup on Friday morning, but there will be no room for Harry Maguire.

Maguire, who has 66 caps for his country, was “shocked” and “gutted” by the decision.

There was a feeling Maguire would be selected after earning a recall to the England squad in March, when he played against Uruguay and Japan. Here are three reasons Maguire is right to feel shocked by his omission.

Harry Maguire is better than Dan Burn

Newcastle’s Dan Burn is in line to be called up to the England squad for the World Cup.

From a purely footballing point of view, it’s baffling that Burn has been selected ahead of Maguire.

Maguire is more of a threat from set-pieces, and he’s a better defender with more experience.

Top-class servant to England at major tournaments

Before Tuchel became England manager, Maguire was one of Gareth Southgate’s most trusted lieutenants despite missing out on Euro 2024 due to an injury.

The 33-year-old has played in three major international tournaments for England, which would’ve made his experience an asset at the 2026 World Cup.

Maguire was a starter at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, while he also played a key role in Euro 2021 as England reached their first major tournament final in 55 years.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Maguire played every minute of the knockout rounds as England reached their first World Cup semi-final since 1990.

In Qatar at the 2022 World Cup, Maguire played a leading role in the heart of England’s defence as their run in the tournament came to an end in the quarter-finals.

Should Kobbie Mainoo be in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup?

After recent form, will Thomas Tuchel be convinced?

Harry Maguire is in top form

Since Michael Carrick was appointed United’s interim head coach, Maguire has been among the best defenders in the Premier League.

That’s five months of consistent form being overlooked by Tuchel.

This could benefit United ahead of next season because Maguire will get the summer to rest and prepare for the upcoming campaign. Tuchel will hope it doesn’t backfire for England.
