Two rising Man Utd academy stars prove Gary Neville’s three transfer priorities are wrong

Gary Neville has named the three signings he wants Manchester United to make this summer, but there are two academy stars that might make him change his mind.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has named his dream signings for Manchester United in the upcoming 2026 summer transfer window, and it includes Elliot Anderson.

Gary Neville made it clear that he thinks United should sign a central midfielder or two and a centre-back.

His dream signings were Marquinhos, Declan Rice and Harry Kane, but his “realistic” transfer list included Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Ezri Konsa.

It is that last name that I think Neville has gotten very wrong.

Man United do not need to buy a centre-back in 2026

Before the 2-1 win over Brentford, Michael Carrick said centre-back was “not an area of concern” going into the transfer window, and I agree.

While Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt are injury prone, there is strength in depth through Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, who has been outstanding recently.

Noussair Mazraoui and Luke Shaw have also proven their worth at centre-back, but importantly, there are two United academy stars coming through the ranks who should not be kept out of the first team by a new signing.

Godwill Kukonki and Dan Armer are future Man Utd centre-backs

Neville clearly believes that United should spend money on a centre-back this summer, but I think the priority should be firmly on the midfield and a left winger, because academy stars Godwill Kukonki and Dan Armer are on the brink of a first-team breakthrough.

Armer has been compared to Maguire because of his style of play, and United should trust the 18-year-old to step into the first team if required next season.

Meanwhile, Kukonki is physically dominant and clearly ready for Premier League football. Sure, they won’t be regular starters ahead of the likes of Yoro or Heaven, but they have proven in the academy that they are deserving of a first-team breakthrough.

Armer and Kukonki could save United millions in the transfer window and allow Ineos to prioritise other positions.

I agree with Carrick that United need a new left winger, while two top-class central midfielders should be the absolute priority.
