Thomas Tuchel was known to be high up on Manchester United’s list to potentially replace Ruben Amorim as permanent head coach, but he can now be written off.
Despite Michael Carrick being unbeaten after five games at Manchester United, the search for a new manager will still undergo a thorough search.
Carrick has put himself in contention for United, but this will only see him involved in the recruitment process, which includes some of the world’s best.
Among those being considered, United are looking at Thomas Tuchel, who is currently in charge of England’s national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
But this now appears very unlikely.

Thomas Tuchel commits future to England
Tuchel would be high on almost everyone’s list to be the next permanent head coach of United, with the German having experience in the league and having also won the Champions League.
However, there will always be doubts over his falling out with boards at prior clubs, and he would only be available after the World Cup.

Now, in breaking news, Tuchel is actually set to sign a new two-year deal with England as confirmed on X to remain in charge until 2028 following Euro 2028, which is being held in the UK.
“I am very happy and proud to extend my time with England. It is no secret to anyone that I have loved every minute so far of working with my players and coaches, and I cannot wait to lead them to the World Cup”.
This is the right call for England, but it almost certainly rules him out of the United job this coming summer unless the World Cup is a complete disaster.

Thomas Tuchel scratched off Manchester United’s list
The timing of this extension to Tuchel is very interesting, coming days after Gary Neville said United had started the process of finding a new manager, which would certainly have involved an interview offer to the German.
While it is possible that this was always the plan, the timing suggests that United might have made an approach to which England immediately acted to secure Tuchel’s future.
Tuchel was previously only under contract until after the upcoming World Cup, which may have seen him demand clarification over his future.
If England hadn’t acted, Tuchel’s entire tournament could be clouded with speculation over United’s managerial position, which is noise the team doesn’t need.
We wouldn’t say that Tuchel can be completely ruled out, but this is definitely a blow for United, considering he was one of the top contenders and now isn’t available.
