Gary Neville says Man United have ‘begun’ manager process as Michael Carrick stance revealed

Ineos decided to wait until the summer before appointing a permanent head coach to replace Ruben Amorim.

Initially, it was Darren Fletcher who stepped in to take charge from Ruben Amorim, but Ineos wanted to bring in an interim head coach.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the favourite, it was decided that Michael Carrick would manage the remaining 17 matches before the end of the 2025/26 season.

Ineos then plan to make a permanent head coach appointment in the summer. But Carrick winning four successive games has thrown a spanner into the works.

United players have supported Carrick staying, but Gary Neville insists United need a new manager. It seems the decision-makers behind the scenes have started their process.

Gary Neville on Man United manager decision

Carrick has been flawless since taking charge, winning all four of his matches to put United in a strong position for Champions League qualification.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville revealed what he has heard from club officials about the search for a new manager.

“I asked the club what is the official position of the football club? In terms of what you’re saying publicly to everybody else?’

“They said ‘we’ve actually begun our process now of starting to look for another manager.’

“What they’ve said is they’re not going to be bounced into, irrespective of wins or draws or losses on the pitch in this next couple of months, making an appointment. They’re going to wait towards the end of the season.

“If Michael Carrick says ‘I want to put my name in the hat’, Carrick would go into a process.”

Michael Carrick is becoming favourite for Man United job

There are now 13 Premier League games remaining this season and Carrick is well on track to achieve the ambitious goal of Champions League qualification.

But the performances produced under Carrick are significant. United are playing some of the best football across the whole division, and confidence has hit a new high.

Carrick has beaten world-class managers along the way, beating title chasers Manchester City and Arsenal back-to-back.

While there are as many as 12 managers linked with United, many supporters will agree that Carrick is earning himself an opportunity to get the permanent job in the summer.
