Even before Andrey Santos has kicked the ball as a Manchester United player, the former Chelsea midfielder’s development could not be clearer.

Andrey Santos was only 18 years old when Chelsea made a move for him in the 2023 January transfer window and signed him from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama.

The Brazilian midfielder was 19 by the time that he arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2023 before Chelsea immediately loaned him back to Vasco da Gama for six months.

Now, at the age of 22, Santos has made a stunning summer switch from Chelsea to Manchester United in the latest major milestone in his professional playing career.

What Andrey Santos said when Chelsea signed him vs when he moved for Man Utd shows the elite maturity in his development

Andrey Santos had developed his fledgling career — at that time at least — in his native homeland before the big opportunity came to move to England.

When the news broke that he would sign for Chelsea, the Brazil international’s emotional maturity was incredibly clear with the few words he used at the time.

“It’s a very big opportunity for me,” Santos said in 2023, as per Sky Sports.

“This is a big club playing in big competitions like the Premier League, so I am very excited. The players here are so good and I am very happy to be here.”

Santos was well aware that he had everything to prove by moving to Stamford Bridge, which could even be a ‘make-or-break moment’ for his entire career.

Fast-forward from 2023 to 2026 and Santos’ mindset had developed in a meaningful way after the way he spoke about his big-money move to Manchester United.

“Everything about Manchester United is special; it is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my biggest idols have represented,” he said after Monday’s announcement, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick. He is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams.

“Everybody told me about how ambitious the club is and the amazing environment that has been created here.

“I know just how strong the squad is and I cannot wait to fight together to compete for the biggest trophies.”

Andrey Santos is arriving at the right age at Man Utd to prove everyone wrong after his Chelsea spell ended

The verdict is divided on Santos’ overall playing spell at Chelsea, so much so that Blues supporters are even torn on allowing the Brazilian to leave this summer.

For Man Utd, Chelsea have laid down the foundation for Santos’ development after he was loaned out to Nottingham Forest, Vasco da Gama and Strasbourg.

Santos was also able to play 47 times for the Blues first team and the Brazil international netted three times and picked up five assists before his club exit.

The former Chelsea midfielder now feels well-positioned to come into his own at Old Trafford, both from an emotional maturity standpoint and as a football player.

The way that Santos has spoken about moving to United compared to the teenager who took the first big step in his career to move to England speaks volumes.
