Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos should step up Manchester United’s pursuit of Bournemouth and Ghana ace Antoine Semenyo after one potential pitfall has been cleared up.

Antoine Semenyo has been linked with Manchester United and the 25-year-old English-born forward impressed at Old Trafford last Monday evening.

Bournemouth and United played a thrilling 4-4 Premier League draw, with Semenyo producing a superb solo run before converting in the first half of last week’s tie.

Semenyo has been a standout performer for Bournemouth and the Cherries now face a major task in keeping hold of the United-linked winger in January.

It has been revealed that the Cherries attacker has a £65m release clause in his current contract at the Vitality, which will become active in 2026.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos can now plan ahead with Man Utd’s transfer interest in Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo

Antoine Semenyo’s reported release clause will become active on 1st January and will run until 10th January, which will be a nail-biting period for Bournemouth fans.

Manchester United are not alone in pursuing Semenyo and several Premier League clubs are linked, including Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham.

However, the Red Devils should not pass up the opportunity to sign Semenyo out of fear of losing another star to the Africa Cup of Nations in the short term.

Are you happy with Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe?

Ruben Amorim is already trying to navigate the next few weeks without Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui due to their call-ups for AFCON.

Semenyo has remained available for selection for Bournemouth during the 2025 AFCON tournament, with Ghana failing to make the competition in Morocco.

The Ghana international would be readily available for United manager Ruben Amorim if the Red Devils did make an approach for the player in January.

But there is another key incentive for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos to consider for why a Semenyo transfer would be worth the investment for United in the long term.

The changes to AFCON’s structure should make Bournemouth and Ghana ace Antoine Semenyo more appealing for Man Utd

BBC Sport reported over the weekend that AFCON will be undergoing a key change from 2028, which will scrap the current two-year time frame between tournaments.

Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe confirmed the decision, which would see AFCON hold back-to-back tournaments in 2027 and 2028.

But following the AFCON 2028 tournament, the competition would move to a four-year time frame similar to the formatting of the Euros and the Copa America.

There could be short-term pain with potentially losing Semenyo, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui to the 2027 and 2028 editions of AFCON.

However, there would be plenty of time for Ineos to continue the major overhaul of the United first-team squad before AFCON 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Amorim could have much more depth in his squad by then to help fill the void left behind by Semenyo – that is, if Ghana even make the next two tournaments.

But the short-term pain of two tournaments could be outweighed by the ample time period between the 2028 AFCON competition and the 2032 edition.
