Sir Dave Brailsford was meant to be a pivotal figure in Ineos’ restructuring of Manchester United.
When Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his minority takeover of Manchester United, it was Sir Dave Brailsford who was at his side throughout it.
Brailsford was not in the footballing department, but he was leading the push for mass job cuts behind the scenes and the restructuring of the club’s hierarchy.
However, it was reported earlier this season that Brailsford has stepped down at United, and paperwork released this week confirmed he is no longer listed as a director at the club.

Sir Dave Brailsford had two ‘dream’ appointments at Man Utd
Brailsford wanted to restructure United’s footballing department, including the addition of a sporting director – a role that had been overlooked by the Glazers.
However, it was Brailsford’s ‘dream’ to appoint Dan Ashworth. United did end up with Ashworth in charge after a long gardening leave period, but he only lasted five months before being fired.
Ashworth’s time at United was a disaster and he has since been replaced as sporting director by Jason Wilcox.
Additionally, Brailsford was involved in United’s search for a new manager when Erik ten Hag was sacked.
Brailsford supported appointing Gareth Southgate despite the former England boss being a hugely unpopular choice among the United fanbase.

Man Utd have fixed their footballing structure
The first 18 months of Ineos ownership was extremely volatile for United as a football club. There were changes to nearly every department and staff coming and going all the time.
Finding a suitable sporting director to work under CEO Omar Berrada and alongside the coaching staff was a top priority, and it quickly became clear that Ashworth was not the right choice.

Ultimately, that is one of the biggest mistakes of Brailsford’s time at United, and it explains why he has been taken out of the football club and put back into Ineos operations.
Now with Wilcox, Christopher Vivell and Berrada, United have a hierarchy that is functioning well.
