Manchester United’s impending swoop for Mali youngster Sekou Kone could prove to be an inspired decision.
Mali wonderkid Sekou Kone is due to complete his Manchester United medical, to wrap up a surprise move to the club.
Kone’s move to United was revealed by Fabrizio Romano, with United set to pay £1 million for the young midfielder.
Sekou Kone is a future star
Sekou Kone made his name at the under-17s World Cup for Mali, where he helped his team reach the semi-finals.
Mali were defeated by France in the final four, before bouncing back with a third-place play-off victory over Argentina.

Argentina’s side featured striker Agustin Ruberto, who has already made his Copa Libertadores debut for River Plate, and Valentino Acuna, who once featured as Lionel Messi’s stunt double in a movie about the star.
Kone stood out as the best player on the pitch during Mali’s impressive 3-0 victory, with the numbers backing up his awesome performance.
- 15 Duels Won
- 3 Key Passes
- 100% Long Ball Accuracy
- 5 Successful Dribbles
- 6 Tackles Won
This was an all-round performance from the teenager playing up against his peers, showcasing his ability on the ball and his tenacity off it.
Kone, now 18, provided two assists at the tournament, demonstrating an ability to break forward and contribute to the attack from his deeper midfield position.
Sekou Kone impact in 2024/25 would be a bonus
Sekou Kone has been signed as a project, a player for the future rather than with the expectation he will make an immediate impact.
He will initially go into Manchester United’s under-21 side. How he performs there, and how he settles off the pitch, will determine the speed of his ascent into the first team.
Anything United get from Kone in his debut season would be a bonus, a very welcome one, and it can’t be ruled out, with the club’s record of bringing through young talent.
United are yet to formally announce the deal for Kone, which will be pending paperwork and international clearance.
