Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd dressing room outburst broke his own rule, he needs to break another

The patience dam for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United finally broke after the team’s 1-3 loss to Brighton at Old Trafford plunged them to a new low.

Man Utd seem destined to finish in the lower half of the table now and the bare minimum expectation is avoiding relegation, a remarkable fall for a club this size.

Amorim had a heated dressing room outburst after the game, with the TV feeling the brunt of it and the players undoubtedly surprised at the heightened emotion.

Amorim’s need to “shock” his players into performing well will be tested against Rangers when they come to Old Trafford in the Europa League.

In the meantime, he has broken one rule he set for himself. He might need to break another soon.

Ruben Amorim breaks his own rule at Man Utd

Amorim has so far cut a determined and confident figure as Man Utd manager, be it his total commitment to his philosophy or his way of dealing with the media.

He has been a man of his word but United’s loss to Brighton forced him to walk back on his own rule.

The Portuguese had said previously that he never talks to the players immediately after the game as the emotions run high and things of substance get lost.

However, his reaction in the dressing room speaks of a person who clearly thought that the rule needed to be kept to one side in extraordinary circumstances.

What effect it will have on the Man Utd squad will only be visible when they take the field against Rangers but regardless of whether it’s successful or not, Amorim needs to learn from this and break another rule.

It’s a similarly extraordinary circumstance calling for it.

Amorim needs to start calling out referees

Alongside his rule of not talking to the players after the game, Amorim has also repeatedly stressed that he doesn’t get into the business of questioning referees.

His logic behind it is completely understandable, as it is useless to talk about a factor not in his hands and he can’t influence no matter what he does.

However, what United have seen happen to them in recent games means that his logic might not be completely foolproof.

Brighton were helped immensely by the referee against United, from not seeing red cards for obvious fouls or his reluctance to award fouls for United.

It wasn’t a singular happening either. United knocked out Arsenal from the FA Cup despite the referee, not because of him, repeatedly being on the wrong side of decisions.

It is often said that these things balance themselves out over the course of a season but in Amorim’s two months on the job, it is impossible to point to many instances where United had the luck of the draw.

Amorim needs to start calling out the narrative and put pressure on the referees because currently, his reluctance to engage is making it easier for the refs to give decisions against United.

Amorim’s stance comes from the right place, but he’s not dealing with the right people.
