Manchester United fans had to witness yet another defeat this season, but they can take solace from the fact that Ruben Amorim has learned from his worst moment this season.

Ruben Amorim has come under heavy criticism this season for stubbornly sticking to his principles and doubling down on them at the cost of others at the club.

Be it his comments about the academy to justify his stance on Kobbie Mainoo, or the loyalty to his system that delivered the ugly 0-1 loss to Everton, the Man Utd manager has had to learn and adapt.

Who was the Man Utd man of the match in the defeat at Villa?

A positive performance despite the loss… who stood out for you?

Against Aston Villa, Amorim showed that while it’s a process, he has already learned from his worst moment as the club manager this season.

Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd nadir came against Everton

United have had some truly poor losses this season, like the elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town, or the 3-1 loss to Brentford.

However, in terms of the pure narrative surrounding the game and Amorim’s role in shaping that, the Everton game is head and shoulders above everything else.

That day, Amorim sat in the dugout like he had seen a ghost, as an XI with as many as eight defenders at one point huffed and puffed to no avail against ten-man Everton.

If someone were to curate an “Anti-Man Utd” game that goes against every club ethos, it was that loss to Everton.

Be it the lack of courage to go gung-ho or ignoring the spark of academy players off the bench, Amorim looked like someone who needed to leave for United to get their mojo back.

The changes were afoot since that game, and before this loss to Villa, United had scored eight goals in their previous two games.

However, it was against Villa that United found themselves in a similar position to the one they were in against Everton.

This time, Amorim proved that he has changed for the better.

Amorim finally managed like a Man Utd manager

United were again trailing against Villa, like they were against Everton that day, but Amorim’s approach couldn’t have been more different.

Off came underperforming players, regardless of their name and pedigree, and their place was taken by the fearlessness of youth.

Shea Lacey and Jack Fletcher made their Utd debut as Amorim finally rolled the dice on the academy, and United finished the game with a midfield of Fletcher and Lisandro Martinez.

Every attacker he had on the bench came on, and United piled on the pressure for an equaliser despite missing eight first-team regulars due to Bruno Fernandes’ injury.

There were missed chances, and Amorim again bemoaned a lack of luck, but as long as the controllables are controlled, he will have credit in the bank.

The most important thing was that Amorim finally leaned on youth and showed courage to tick two out of the three Utd ethos – Youth. Courage. Success.

Doing so will allow him time to achieve the third one – success – as well.
