Ruben Amorim must not overlook the real prospect of playing one Manchester United talent against Lyon in the crucial Europa League clash on Thursday.

The Red Devils were in France last Thursday and Lyon hosted Manchester United in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

United trailed Lyon 1-0 away from home before the Red Devils mounted a comeback and Ruben Amorim’s men were leading the contest in the dying stages of the match.

However, Andre Onana’s shocking performance for United saw the Red Devils No 1 commit two major howlers and Lyon were able to secure an injury-time equaliser.

Following on from the 2-2 Europa League encounter in France, Amorim’s men returned to Premier League action on Sunday with their visit to St James’ Park.

Newcastle outclassed United in the second half on the weekend and the Magpies inflicted a thumping 4-1 Premier League victory over Amorim’s side.

United manager Amorim has already had to turn his attention to Thursday for the Red Devils’ vital second-leg Europa League quarter-final tie against Lyon.

Ruben Amorim must consider Harry Amass’ role for Man Utd in the Europa League quarter-final match at Old Trafford vs Lyon

Ruben Amorim was left with very few positives from Manchester United’s 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Newcastle on Sunday afternoon at St James’ Park.

However, the 40-year-old former Sporting CP manager could take solace in how Harry Amass performed for United in the Premier League match with Newcastle.

Amorim handed Harry Amass his first-ever Premier League start and the 18-year-old United defender played 55 minutes before he came off for full-back Patrick Dorgu.

The left-back has made a name for himself in the United youth academy and it was only a matter of time before Amass started to challenge for a place in the first team.

Amass took his place as the left wing-back in Amorim’s tactical system for United and the Red Devils talent wasn’t short of confidence with his performance.

The United full-back didn’t reinvent the wheel with his display against Newcastle, but Amass did prove that he could be relied on for big matches under Amorim.

Ruben Amorim’s clear-cut verdict on Harry Amass after Newcastle vs Man Utd and ahead of the Lyon clash in the Europa League

Harry Amass has managed two appearances for United in the Premier League this season, but he has not played in the Europa League in the 2024-25 campaign.

However, Amorim now needs a confident player like Amass against Lyon with the aggregate scoreline sitting at 2-2 and the United talent could write his name in the stars on the night.

Speaking after United’s defeat to Newcastle, Red Devils boss Amorim praised Amass for his solid display for the his side at St James’ Park on the weekend.

“I think he did quite well,” he said, as per the Metro.

“He caught a player that is really fast, he made his debut in maybe one of the hardest stadiums with a team that is really in a good moment.

“I think he did really well so he needs to continue and we need to help all these young kids to perform in a higher level.”

United and Lyon will kick off the return-leg match in the Europa League quarter-finals at 8pm UK time at Old Trafford on Thursday.
