Ruben Amorim’s first trip to Anfield as Manchester United head coach ended in a draw, but his comments that day have since failed to come to fruition.
Manchester United are looking to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League after a convincing victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford. If the Red Devils take three points from Liverpool, which is a big if, Ruben Amorim will record consecutive league wins for the first time since joining the club.
Looking for their first win at Anfield since 2016, when Wayne Rooney scored the only goal to win the game, United face a Liverpool team that has been beaten in their last three matches across all competitions.

Ruben Amorim still waiting for Man Utd consistency
United’s most recent trip to Anfield ended in a 2-2 draw, with Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo getting on the scoresheet for the Red Devils.
It was Amorim’s first time managing in the North West derby, which means he will want to chalk off his first win over the Scousers on their own turf.
The first half ended goalless before United took an early lead after the break through Martinez.
Cody Gakpo equalised seven minutes later, before Matthijs de Ligt gave away a penalty with 20 minutes remaining on the clock, only for Mohamed Salah to score.
There was late drama in the game as Amad scored an 80th-minute equaliser.
Although United didn’t get the win, Amorim’s side was praised by pundits for their performance.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Amorim stressed the importance of maintaining the same level of performance over time. He stressed that they needed to start from that point, but consistency remains one of United’s biggest issues at the beginning of the 2025/26 campaign.
Amorim said (via BBC Sport): “That is clear. Everybody thinks the same thing. We have to start being consistent someday, not in the way we play but in how we face the competition – so let’s start today.”
United have got worse since Amorim said that, as they look for their first away win of the season.
There has been no consistency whatsoever in United’s results since Amorim arrived, but this is something Ratcliffe has chosen to be patient with. It has undoubtedly been his biggest flaw as head coach.
Only time will tell if Ratcliffe will be rewarded for his patience.
