Gordon Hill picks out his one non-negotiable for Liverpool vs Man Utd, explains why he won’t predict result

Gordon Hill has now shared his thoughts on how the upcoming Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester United will play out.

This will be the first meeting between the two rivals in the 2025/26 season, with neither club in its best run of form.

Manchester United are sitting 10th in the Premier League, while defending champions Liverpool are second after losing their last three matches across all competitions.

A win for United would see Ruben Amorim win back-to-back league games for the first time since he became United head coach. It would be the perfect way to get the ball rolling after the October international break.

Ahead of the game on Sunday, questions are being asked whether United have what it takes to beat Liverpool.

Gordon Hill demands ‘fight’ from Man Utd when they face Liverpool

Amorim has only managed at Anfield on one occasion. United drew 2-2 with Liverpool, and it was one of the best performances fans had witnessed under the Portuguese coach.

Amorim should be eager to build on that with a win on Sunday, which would see Arne Slot come under increased scrutiny following a questionable run of results.

United In Focus caught up with former United winger Gordon Hill, who was part of the 1977 FA Cup-winning side, to speak about the trip to Anfield.

The 71-year-old joked that the only thing United were guaranteed at Anfield was a cup of tea and a shower.

Hill went on to stress that Amorim’s side must be willing to fight to get a result at Liverpool, but he refused to be drawn on a scoreline prediction due to uncertainty about which United will show up on the day.

“I don’t predict it because it all depends on how they want to come out and play,” Hill said exclusively.

“We’re at Anfield. So what would you expect going to Anfield? All we got when we went there was a cup of tea and a shower. That’s all we got. So if you’re expecting that, you’re going to go out and want to get a little bit more. What we’ve got is saying, ‘right, okay, guys, we’re going to a place where if you don’t battle, you will get nothing.

“How much do these players want to win at Anfield. Really want to win at Anfield. Not just to be part of the furniture. Not to be saying, just there to make up the numbers.

“And I couldn’t tell you what team he’s going to put out there. You can’t tell us what team because we don’t know.

“What are we going to be able to do at Anfield? Are we going to go there and say, tell you what, put up a fight? I don’t mind losing. I have no problem losing if we put up a fight.”

Man Utd’s last five trips to Anfield

It will be the 100th time United play at Anfield when they arrive on Sunday, but recent memories from the stadium are not positive.

United have not beaten Liverpool on their home turf since 2016 when Wayne Rooney scored the winner.

Three of the last five matches at Anfield between Liverpool and United ended in a draw, while the Scousers were victorious by large margins on two occasions.
