Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is set to announce his return to football after serving a suspension for doping.

Nine years on, the £89m deal to re-sign Paul Pogba remains Manchester United’s biggest transfer fee in club history.

However, the French midfielder’s second spell at Old Trafford certainly split opinion, and he didn’t leave on good terms after limping off against Liverpool in his final appearance.

He left the club in 2022 as a free agent after refusing all contract offers. After his exit, Pogba wanted to prove United made a mistake by not offering him the contract he wanted.

A return to Juventus followed, but Pogba was given a doping suspension in September 2023 and he is only just making his return to football.

Parting ways with Pogba as a free agent was a hugely controversial decision given the record-breaking fee spent signing him.

However, Pogba described United’s £300,000 per week offer as “nothing”, as per the Daily Mail. In order to stay at Old Trafford, he wanted a jaw-dropping offer.

United walked away from Pogba’s demands and his career has nosedived ever since. Despite reports that Pogba would return to United, the 32-year-old’s future has now become clear.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Pogba is set to join French outfit Monaco after verbally agreeing to sign a deal until 2027.

Pogba has been training with Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro in anticipation of his return, and it seems a return to France is now on the cards.

United have a bad history of giving out big-money deals to undeserving players and then struggling to offload them.

Ineos are currently trying to sell Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho but their huge wages at Old Trafford are making it difficult to find any willing buyers.

Had United bowed down to Pogba and given him a huge contract in 2022, Ineos could be stuck with another huge earner.

Pogba’s swipes at United since leaving reinforce the fact that the club made the right decision to let him go, even if he walked away for free.

Ineos have been trying to regain control of United’s wage bill, and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be delighted that Pogba wasn’t offered a ridiculous contract before he took charge.
