One positive from controversial Ineos decision could lead to early Diego Leon debut

Manchester United have made a controversial decision to cash-in with a post-season tour. There is one potential winner.

Ineos have decided on a PSR-busting move to raise £8 million with a post-season tour of Malaysia.

It is a pure money-grab, with Manchester United’s season being unnecessarily extended with a long-haul flight, and games, in addition to the usually grueling pre-season tour.

And while the tour is of little use to United’s first team players, it could present an opportunity for others.

Diego Leon chance

One player who could be eyeing the post-season tour with excitement is incoming signing Diego Leon.

Manchester United have agreed terms to sign the Paraguay youngster from Cerro Porteno, with Fabrizio Romano reporting paperwork has been signed.

Leon, 17, cannot move to United yet, he can only leave the Paraguayan club when he turns 18.

The teenager turns 18 on April 3, which is outside the transfer window, meaning he can only link up with Manchester United in the summer.

However, rather than being introduced on the pre-season tour, Diego Leon could link up with the team on the post-season tour, moving his debut forward by a few weeks.

This in itself could be reason for fans to have something to look forward to with the post-season tour, rather than seeing the same old players we are tired of watching, after what looks like being a tough season.

Diego Leon status for 2025/26 unclear

It is yet to be determined whether Diego Leon will be part of the Manchester United first team squad for the 2025/26 season.

This is a decision to be assessed by head coach Ruben Amorim during pre-season.

If he can get a look at him on the post-season tour, it will only help to inform him, and this may also influence United’s transfer window plans for the summer.

United also have Harry Amass, while Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw face uncertain futures at the club after lengthy battles with injuries.

The move for Leon is a sign United are looking to strengthen, but whether he spends next season with the academy, out on loan, or with the first team, is yet to be established.
