The worst-kept secret at Man Utd is now out as Michael Carrick is officially announced as the club’s permanent manager.
It felt like a gradual step up from his miraculous interim spell, where he exceeded all expectations to guide United to a Champions League place.
As his first act as Man Utd manager, he has moved to calm the fears that fans saw from Ruben Amorim after his first game in charge.

Deserved? Or are you concerned?
Ruben Amorim was caught off-guard at Man Utd
Amorim always maintained an honest and frank demeanour at Man Utd, perhaps too honest at times.
Fans appreciated it at first, but when that honesty took a turn for self-flagellation, the dynamics took a turn for the worse.
The warning signs were there after the very first game; it’s just that the fans refused to see it in the euphoria of his being a new hire.
After managing United to a 1-1 draw away at Ipswich, Amorim was dazed and accepted in his post-match duties that he had already given more interviews than he had during his whole time at Sporting.
That would remain a pain point, with Amorim increasingly using his interviews as therapy for himself and shock therapy for the fans listening.
The interviews never ceased, but it was a sign of United hiring someone who had no idea what was entailed when he became manager.
A lack of preparedness is the worst thing you can have when taking on a job of the size of United.
Therefore, it’s pertinent that Carrick’s first act as Man Utd manager was to soothe those concerns.
Michael Carrick is a ‘natural’ Man Utd manager
Amorim was a quintessential case of a manager not really knowing how big United are until you step inside the club.
ACCEPT or HIT BACK: I won’t mind a loss against Brighton as long as Bruno Fernandes breaks the PL assist record!
Have the standards fallen at Man Utd, or is the chance to make history in a dead-rubber game a no-brainer?
All his charisma, tactical intelligence, and man management went out the window because of the sheer ambassadorial pressure which comes with being a United manager.
Carrick, in contrast, knows the club inside out and made that point in his first interview after being named the permanent manager.
When asked how he felt about the job, he puffed his chest out and confidently claimed that it felt completely ‘natural’ to him.
He said: “It feels pretty natural. It feels big on the outside, but when you’re in it, it’s kind of what you’re used to for 20 years since I signed here. It’s all I’ve ever known, really.
“It’s a bigger role than I’ve had before, but it feels like a natural next step for me. It’s a lot of responsibility, but it’s good.”
Carrick’s comments above are in sharp contrast to Amorim’s. While Carrick made light of what United look like from the outside because he’s been inside, Amorim was caught off guard by the same.
Regardless of whether Carrick is a success or a failure in the long term, he’s already soothed a major worry which doomed Amorim at the end.
