Man Utd hold key advantage over Tottenham for Mateus Fernandes transfer, Ineos need to use it

Mateus Fernandes looks set to join either Manchester United or Tottenham this summer, with both sides holding advantages over the other.

On the one hand, Manchester United are unwilling to pay the £85m fee West Ham want for Mateus Fernandes.

While Tottenham Hotspur are.

This is a telling advantage, because they will throw more money at the club and player as they desperately look to climb away from a third season threatened by relegation on the bounce.

But United won’t be giving up, thanks to one key card being held.

Should Man Utd walk away from the Mateus Fernandes deal if West Ham refuse to lower their asking price? 🤔

Mateus Fernandes favours Manchester United to Tottenham

With Spurs willing to pay more, United need Fernandes to copy Bryan Mbeumo in making it clear to his club he will only join the Red Devils, despite Tottenham’s interest.

Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, Andy Mitten has offered some hope for this.

He explained that United’s understanding is that Fernandes wants to join the club and would prefer to play for United rather than Spurs.

However, the catch is that he isn’t snubbing Spurs, as he “would play for Tottenham”, according to Mitten.

This keeps Tottenham alive and means United probably needs to match the London side’s offers.

But on the flip side, Fernandes favouring United hands Ineos an important advantage, but only if the club are proactive and uses it.

After the 8 Champions League group games, Man Utd will play 5 Premier League matches at home and 3 away. See the FULL breakdown…

Ineos need to make Fernandes push for United

With Fernandes’ preference being United, to play alongside his idol Bruno Fernandes, United can’t just sit and allow Spurs to win the race with their reckless financial approach this summer.

United need to be pushing Fernandes and Jorge Mendes to inform West Ham that it is Old Trafford and Old Trafford alone that he wants to move to.

Whether that means also signing Crysencio Summerville to get a discount on the two, United need to make use of Fernandes’ preference.

Unless a superior alternative is found or the financial package is ridiculous, United cannot lose transfer races to Spurs of all clubs.

So it’s imperative that Fernandes is told he has to work for his dream move.

After all, as Sir Alex Ferguson famously said, “Lads… It’s Tottenham.”
