Mason Mount has become an expensive luxury Man Utd should try to cut ties with

Mason Mount has been a Manchester United player for almost three years, but you could count his standout performances on one hand.

In July 2023, Mason Mount joined Manchester United in a deal worth £55million, only to inherit the iconic number 7 shirt previously worn by David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and George Best.

Mount’s first two seasons at Old Trafford were largely defined by injuries, as he was limited to just 31 Premier League appearances.

Despite 2025/26 being his most consistent period at United, I remain unconvinced by Mount. The 27-year-old has exhausted the club’s patience almost since the day he arrived.

Mason Mount wants to stay, but Man Utd need to be ruthless

Mount has had plenty of admirers at United. Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim made it no secret that they were big fans of the England international, yet they couldn’t get the best out of him at United.

Under Michael Carrick, Mount has had more injuries and is trying to work his way into the team for the two fixtures left to play this season.

When United assess the squad at the end of the season, serious questions must be asked about Mount’s future following three underwhelming years from the midfielder.

Mount’s injury record is particularly worrying as his setbacks have not stemmed from freak contract incidents, but rather from persistent soft-tissue issues, most notably recurring calf and hamstring strains.

For a Champions League winner renowned for his creativity and goal threat from midfield, Mount’s return of just three goals and one assist in 23 appearances this term is staggering. Even if this is statistically his ‘best’ season at Old Trafford, it remains far from the standard expected of a player entering his fourth year on the books.

The argument that Mount serves as adequate cover for Fernandes falls short. I would contend that United require greater quality and depth to compete in the Champions League. That means top players who can be relied upon.

Even if United wanted to get rid of Mount, they would probably find it difficult to find someone to take him on his current salary. The Sun stresses that Mount is keen to stay and fight for his place at United.

I mean, why wouldn’t he with his salary set to increase to £250,000 per week after United secured a return to the Champions League?

If Mount remains at United this summer, he will be like a player living on borrowed time, having tested the club’s patience to its limit.

How many games has Mason Mount played under Michael Carrick?

Since Carrick was appointed interim head coach in January, Mount has featured in six matches.

It didn’t help that Mount missed nearly two months of action between February and April due to a calf strain.

Interestingly, Mount started just one of those matches, in a scoreless draw against Sunderland last week.

Mount will hope to get more minutes under his belt in the final two games of the season against Nottingham Forest and Brighton.
