Manchester United’s best possible XI if Patrick Dorgu signing is sealed, it’s bad news for long-serving player

Manchester United are considering a move to sign Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu.

Patrick Dorgu is currently looking like Manchester United’s most likely signing this month, despite Lecce previously warning they do want to sell the prospect in January.

The 20-year-old would solve a key problem for Manchester United, becoming the club’s new first choice left-wing back.

It is a role Manchester United have struggled to fill, with Diogo Dalot playing as a makeshift solution, and doing so poorly in the loss to Brighton.

Manchester United XI with Patrick Dorgu

Patrick Dorgu’s potential role in the Manchester United starting XI would be at left-wing-back – even though his proven versatility could allow him to play further forward.

There would be knock-on effects from him joining the club, with Diogo Dalot no longer guaranteed a spot in the team.

United’s best back three right now is Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire. Youngster Leny Yoro has been given opportunities, yet has not taken them.

Noussair Mazraoui would be Manchester United’s first choice right wing-back, ahead of Dalot.

Mazraoui can also play in a back three, in case Ruben Amorim decided to start Amad at right wing-back. But for now, he is the best option.

The rest of United’s XI would be completed by Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte in midfield, Bruno Fernandes and Amad in attack, with Rasmus Hojlund up front.

Luke Shaw would lose out

Patrick Dorgu’s arrival would signal a new era for Luke Shaw, who should in theory be Manchester United’s first choice left-back.

Shaw has not been fit enough to play in the wing-back role yet under Ruben Amorim.

When he did make a couple of brief substitute appearances for Amorim, Shaw was deployed as part of a back three.

Dorgu signing for United would present a further challenge for Shaw, and while he has seen off competition in the past, right now his biggest competitor is his own body.

Lecce star Dorgu would get the chance to make the position his own, leaving Shaw to compete for one of the centre-back spot.
