Manchester United’s U21 side is through to the Premier League 2 semi-finals after a 4-1 thrashing of West Ham, with one particular player standing out.

After finishing fifth in the regular league campaign, the post season play-offs have brought more joy for Travis Binnion’s side who have now stepped into the semi-final after beating fourth place West Ham on Monday evening.

It was a rapid-fire second half that claimed Manchester United the victory after a slow start. This saw James Scanlon score the first, which made it 1-1 at the time, followed by Ethan Wheatley in the 60th minute, Sam Murray in the 78th, and finally Sam Mather in the 92nd.

It was Scanlon’s 23rd goal of the season, while Mather and Wheatley have bounced back after disappointing loan moves this season, with both struggling to get minutes.

Wheatley signed a new United contract this year and will surely be now eyeing up whether he can challenge Chido Obi for the back-up role in Ruben Amorim’s side.

However, it will have been another youngster who once again will have caught Amorim’s eye with his excellence in midfield.

Tyler Fletcher is finishing off a sensational season in style

This season in the academy, there have been few better than Tyler Fletcher, with the son of Darren Fletcher really coming into his own in the midfield for the U18s and U21s. Fletcher has been improving week by week over the course of the season and now looks like an excellent defensive midfielder, with his creativity being the main highlight of his campaign.

Against West Ham, Fletcher started and provided two of the assists in United’s comeback victory over the Hammers. Both were rather simple in nature, as he slipped Scanlon in to score from the right, and the Wheatley assist was a tackle that passed to the clinical forward.

These two assists were the latest in an impressive campaign from holding midfield, where he has been excellent this season, with excellent passing and defensive work.

This meant Fletcher had two goals and two assists in the last three games at U21. This form from Fletcher in recent weeks led to praise from Binnion.

“Tyler’s making great strides. We know he’s a really great footballer, everyone knows he is, you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to see he’s a good footballer.”

To have stepped up into the U21 side so effortlessly and performed to the same level is a good sign for the 18-year-old in his quest to break into Amorim’s first team squad.

Ruben Amorim should give Tyler Fletcher his debut this season

After United’s first team lost 4-3 to Brentford on Sunday, just three league games are remaining this season, which are second in the priority list to the Europa League, in which a place in the final looks likely.

Due to this, Amorim has been expected to rotate heavily with youth players, something he has yet to do, but may look at doing for the visit of Aston Villa on the final day of the season, with the first team likely to be exhausted from the final in Bilbao.

So against Villa, Amorim could field a team similar to the one Jose Mourinho did on the final day in 2017, when Josh Harrop scored against Crystal Palace, and in this case, Fletcher should be in the running as he could be ready to replace Christian Eriksen next season if he can have as seamless a rise as he did for the U21s.

Fletcher could play alongside a Kobbie Mainoo or Bruno Fernandes in United’s team if he were considered ready to make his impact. One thing is for sure: he is beginning to knock on the door.
