Manchester United’s win against Athletic Club might go down in history as the one where it all clicked for Ruben Amorim but it was equally as important for one embattled star.
The 3-0 win vs Athletic Club was built on the back of experienced campaigners like Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, and Casemiro.
Manuel Ugarte’s creative explosion has had a role to play in it as well, becoming Ruben Amorim’s own Roy Keane in the process.
However, Ugarte was always going to be a beneficiary of Amorim’s arrival and so it has proved. It is another Man Utd star who completed the journey from unwanted to untouchable against Athletic.

Man Utd star completes turnaround
Man Utd might be set to play at most two more games of consequence from now on until the end of the season but for many in the squad, these are the most important games of their career.
That’s because United are preparing a blockbuster summer window where the futures of many at Old Trafford will be on the chopping block.
Therefore, it is crucial for those players to impress till the end of the season, and they can now look towards one person on the team who’s done exactly that.
He’s gone from being the subject of exit rumours and being propped up as the example of bad business by the previous regime to becoming the first name on the teamsheet.
Casemiro has shown the way for fringe stars that there’s a way back for everyone at Man Utd under Amorim if they do the basics right and repeat the manager’s faith.
The Brazilian has become somewhat of a Europa League specialist and continued to live up to that moniker against Athletic, putting in a maverick display that rolled back the years.
Casemiro’s contract not a liability anymore
It was always believed that Casemiro was not as bad as the system was making him look, even though he had inevitably lost a step or two due to age.
That theory has been proven correct as Amorim has surrounded him with more protection and less area to cover, allowing him to flourish.
Casemiro will probably still be on sale in the summer but if he’s difficult to shift, as he’s expected to be, at least his contract is no longer a liability.
The midfielder has become a genuine untouchable at Old Trafford, a player called upon for the big occasions and always turning up too.
If he keeps that status next season, something will have gone wrong during the transfer window but for now, he’s completed his journey from being unwanted to being untouchable.
