The January transfer window is here, and with that, a lot of speculation about how Man Utd will go about retooling the fine edges of the squad.
Man Utd fans shouldn’t be expecting a massive rebuild to take place in the middle of the season, especially because their priority targets, like Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba won’t be available.
However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of movement, because Ruben Amorim can still oversee multiple departures, which means replacements arrive.
WHAT would be your dream January transfer window for Manchester United?💰🔥
Here’s what Man Utd’s ideal XI could look like if the January window goes according to plan-

GK – Senne Lammens
Something will have gone extremely wrong if Senne Lammens isn’t the first-choice goalkeeper at the end of the window.
CBs – Matthijs de Ligt, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez
It’s the most difficult choice because of Ayden Heaven’s breakout, but Lisandro Martinez, not missing a beat despite being injured for a long time, sees him take the final spot.
De Ligt is undroppable when fit, while Shaw is United’s ironman this season.
WBs – Amad and Diogo Dalot
Dalot might be upgraded over the summer, but right now, his partnership with Amad has given Ruben Amorim his best run of results.
CMs – Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro
Fernandes-Casemiro will remain Amorim’s tried-and-tested pivot, but the first new signing should arrive in midfield, especially if Kobbie Mainoo leaves.
United have been in talks with Ruben Neves’ agent, while the rumours around Conor Gallagher refuse to go away. Expect United to sign a midfielder if Mainoo goes on loan.
Ruben Neves has emerged as a possible midfield signing for Man Utd in January
Still only 28, Portugal international, do you think United should sign Neves? 💷
CAMs – Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo
They were signed in the summer to play these positions and they will hope to do so for a long stretch after AFCON, as they haven’t been able to build chemistry due to injuries/absences.
ST – Jean-Philippe Mateta
Benjamin Sesko needs someone to take pressure off him, Joshua Zirkzee has one foot out of the exit door, while Chido Obi has been declared not ready by Amorim.
Enter Crystal Palace’s Mateta, who has entered the last 18 months of his contract and is stalling on new talks as he weighs up his options.
If Zirkzee leaves, United could try to tempt Palace with an offer for a player who seems determined to make a big move.
Mateta is as proven as it gets in the Premier League, and he’ll allow Sesko to step away from the spotlight to develop. An ambitious club gets this deal done in January if Zirkzee leaves.
